A new 22-story Wisma Budaya (Cultural Heritage Building) is set to be built in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, replacing the existing dilapidated structure at the same location on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.
The project aims to consolidate the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) and its various agencies under one roof.
The new building will be a modern, state-of-the-art facility featuring a two-story atrium hall, a performing arts center, a dance studio, a “Black Box” theater hall, and a multi-story car park with a capacity for up to 500 cars.
It will also be equipped with advanced IT and AV facilities to meet modern needs.
Demolition of the old building is planned to begin soon, with a projected completion time of two years. There is however no information on the exact dates for demolition as well as the start of constuction for the new building.
According to State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew, the new Wisma Budaya will not only serve as a central administrative hub but also as a vibrant center for the promotion and preservation of Sabah’s diverse cultural heritage.
It is reported that the current Wisma Budaya Sabah building is very old, unsafe for occupation, and hence the need for a new building.
