Sri Maha Mariamman Temple to be opened next year

The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Jalan Rock is on the cusp of completion and is anticipated to open in early next year, promising a significant new landmark for Borneo.
The temple is set to feature the region’s tallest Raja Gopuram (main entrance tower), a six-storey, 600-tonne structure designed to house over 100 deities.
This imposing tower will serve as the spectacular gateway to a spiritual center where the main shrine will be dedicated to Sri Maha Mariamman, the revered mother goddess of protection and nurturing.
The construction is currently in its final stages, with the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Association president, Datuk Shankar Ram Asnani, noting that only the shrines and the installation of deities remain.
Shankar, who shared the updates, explained that the final steps involve the arrival of the deities from India, followed by a series of essential rituals.
Due to these necessary procedures, the consecration ceremony is expected to take place around January or February next year, depending on the precise timing of the deities’ arrival.
Once ready, the temple will be an icon for Kuching City which is now blessed several other religious tourist attractions in the likes of the Darul Hana Floating Mosque, the St Peter’s Church and the Tua Pek Kong.
