SarawakPass: SarawakID rebranded and further enhanced for future use

Sarawak is embracing the digital era with the launch of the SarawakPass, a significant initiative by the Sarawak government to provide a trusted and unified digital identity for its citizens and a streamlined platform for government services.

SarawakPass was announced during the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS), with it representing a major evolution from the former ‘SarawakID‘ application.

The primary objective of SarawakPass is to embody the principle of “One Identity, Multiple Opportunities”.

It aims to consolidate various government applications and digital services into a single, comprehensive mobile application.

This centralization is designed to simplify access for Sarawakians, reducing the need to juggle multiple apps for different services and instead offering a cohesive digital experience.

You would be forgiven if such feature does sound similar to what SarawakID used to offer, but SarawakPass comes by slightly differently.

Unlike SarawakID, the new SarawakPass is not only an improved version of its predecessor, but is positioned as a feature-rich digital pass, integrating advanced digital identity functionalities crucial for a modern digital economy.

Key features expected to be rolled out include:

  • Trusted Digital Identity: Providing a secure and verified digital identity for every Sarawakian.
  • Integrated Digital Wallet: Incorporating digital payment functionalities, likely integrating with the local digital payment platform, SPay Global (formerly Sarawak Pay).
  • Unified Service Access: Combining applications like Service Sarawak and Sarawak Gov, acting as a single gateway to a wide range of state government services.
  • MyBenefit Integration: Expected to include features for accessing and managing various government benefits and schemes.
  • eKYC for Non-Malaysians: Foreigners are required to register through the SarawakPass mobile app, utilizing electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) processes with their passports for verification.

The development of SarawakPass is being overseen by the Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS), the state’s IT arm.

It is important to note that SarawakPass is not a physical “pass” and visa requirement related to entry, stay, or employment in Sarawak.

With the introduction of SarawakPass, Sarawak’s journey towards realizing its digital economy aspirations, promising convenience, security, and unified access to public services is slowly taking shape.
