Sarawakians review Borneo Sonic Music Festival

The second edition of the Borneo Sonic Music Festival wrapped up yesterday night and like every event held in Kuching, there is always many review and comments related it, with us able to get some reviews from our readers this year.

Prior to that unofficial figures put the number of attendees to over 30,000 (some saying this is a modest figure), but many say the numbers of those attending the biggest paying concert and festival in Borneo is much higher as the football field was packed.

Anyway, for the 2024 borneo Sonic Music festival, fans were entertained with A-class artist which came from across the globe to perform in Kuching, with some artist such as JESSI openly stating that it is their first time even in Kuching.

Household and headline artist like Rain, Got7’s YoungJae, JESSI, Bunga Cinta Lestari, JUNNY, Yoon Seobin, Judika, Yuna and Natalie La Rose didn’t dissapoint as they wowed the crowed with impresive performances and vocals, while other artist like 4EVE, DOLLA, Jess Lee, DJ Blink, Zed-XSlumberJack, Namewee, Thomas and Pricialla Abby gained new followings from Kuching after energetic and world class performances as well.

You can see highlights of both days below.

Thanks to ‘the boss of the festival’, Steven Au, KuchingBorneo was also able to send a few of our readers and followers to the festival this year and here is their review about the Borneo Sonic Music Festival 2024 after going for two days.

Beatrice Claire Matthew (First time concert attendee)

“This was the perfect ‘me time’ for me. The crowd was awesome and the atmosphere was vibrant and unforgettable.

Generally, it was hard to choose who was my favourite performer, but I think Rain and Jessi definitely stole the show.

I’ve been following Rain since his debut and had seen his music and performances evolve, and definately brought his A game at Borneo Sonic Music Festival.

Jessi’s had perfect fan interaction and was really cute and full of energy!

I hope this festival will continue and I’d love to see 2NE1, Hwasa/Mamamoo, Rossa, Noah, Shila Amzah, Ernie Zakri and Judika again (since he promised to return!).

I also hope more top artists will be able to experience the magic of Sarawak and I am already excited for Borneo Sonic Music Festival 2025.

Also, huge shoutout to the BSMF2024 organizers for putting together such an epic lineup and experience! The energy, the vibes, and the attention to detail are truly next-level.

Thank you for creating a space where music lovers from all walks of life can come together and make unforgettable memories. Can’t wait for what’s in store – BSMF just keeps getting better every year.”

Imelda Neleon (Experienced concert attendee)

Borneo Sonic Music Festival was fun!!

I believe Borneo Sonic Music Festival will put Sarawak on the map for international artist. For us, it helps promote Sarawak as a tourist destination as well.

I really enjoyed Youngjae’s performance because I was anticipating him since the beginning.

As fan of GOT7, being able to see each member perform live is a dream came true.

I’m however very surprised by 4EVE! I never heard of them but I can guarantee that I went home as a new fan of this Thai girl group.

If I had to choose my favourite performers for the two night, it would be Youngjae, 4EVE, Bunga Cinta Lestari, Judika and Jessi!

I wish to see other GOT7 members at BSMF next year.

I do hope the organizers keep up the good work and improve their future editions to make the experience even better. I think the ticket pricing is okay already as I’m watching watching various artists in one festival, but a reduction in price is always welcomed.

Jessica Frederick Kangkuk (First time concert attendee)

“I attended the concert being 7 months pregnant but the experience at Borneo Sonic Music Festival is something I will cherish forever.

I’m a big fan of JESSI and so my favourite performer during the festival was JESSI.

I do also love the performances from Judika, DOLLA, Bunga Cinta Lestari and Rain.

To be honest, I have never been to a big concert which features major artist like this before and this is my first time.

I really hope Sarawak can become a place where artists like to hold their concerts because it gives me an opportunity to me to attend and sing along with other fans during these concerts.

Thank you KuchingBorneo for organizing the contest, and Borneo Sonic Music Festival holding the concert in Kuching. If it is not because of you two, I will likely never experience such a massive and enjoyable concert like this one in my life.

Shirleycca Gibson Unjau (First time BSMF concert attendee)

I’m excited and thrilled to be at Borneo Sonic Music Festival. No words could describe how I feel being able to watch all the artists live on stage.

It is just a fantastic experience plus having this gift on my birthday makes me on Cloud 9.

All the artist performed well, but my favourites are Rain, Bunga Cinta Lestari, Jessi, Judika, Slumberjack and DJ Blink.

Borneo Sonic was fantastic and great. I’m happy, excited, and overjoyed and felt the sonic wave of emotions during the performances. I really can’t express my emotions in one word but it was truly exceptional. This is the best birthday present by far.

Next year I would love to see more UNGU band, CN Blue, All Time Low, others korean artist and perhaps the return of Judika. My hope is that BSMF will bring in more international artists from Korea, Taiwan, or Japan or even Europe in the future and perhaps may feature other various sonic genre such as Jazz, Electronic beats, and Rock.

I’d also really like to thanks to the organiser for organising this event. The festival I hope would continue because it’s another brand for Sarawak, like RWMF and Borneo Jazz. It will also boost tourism and make Sarawak better known abroad.

That said BSMF should be continued. The festival serves as an exceptional platform to spotlight a diverse array of talent both local and international artists aside from boosting tourism.

It also offers an invaluable chance for local Sarawakians to engage with both local and international artists.

This is a rare chance for us Sarawakians to see both local and international artists on stage on our homeland and I hope more will come.

My heartfelt thank you to the KuchingBorneo for the free ticket (BSMF’ 24) giveaways and organizers of Borneo Sonic. I’m immensely grateful I was able to watch the live concert with my friends and having a good time together.”

Conclusion, and more on Borneo Sonic Music Festival

In general, many that we met also commented and made a review that Borneo Sonic Music Festival had made massive concerts featuring A-list international artist more affordable and accesible for local Sarawakians.

The general hope is that the festival will continue to bring in more major names, and slowly help turn Sarawak into a concert destination for major artist around the globe.
