Sarawak Science Centre (SSC)

The Sarawak Science Centre or SSC is a project by the Sarawak Government which dates back to 2017.

The idea was to create a Science Centre which is the first of a kind in the region, while promoting young Sarawakians to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and will be the first of its kind in Borneo.

It also hoped that the Sarawak Science Centre would be a regional success, and a sister centre to the Science Centre Singapore.  To ensure this, the centre will be complemented by the Sarawak Bio-Industrial Park and Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre.

The project was announced in July 2022, with construction of the building currently on-going on a 10.97-acre piece of land in Petra Jaya.

In November 2022, it was announced that some RM20 million was allocated to the construction of the centre.

The construction of SSC was under the purview of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research.

In May 2023, it was announced that the construction of the centre would begin in the final quarter of 2023. [Source: DD]
