Open Air Market Kuching to be upgraded

Kuching’s iconic Open Air Market is set to receive a significant facelift as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its infrastructure and facilities.

According to an article by TVS, this exciting development was announced by Datuk Bandar Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU), Dato Hilmy Othman, during a special event celebrating the Chinese New Year 2025.

Dato Hilmy Othman emphasized that the despite the upgrades, the Open Air Market area is within the Kuching Heritage area, and DBKU will ensure the the upgrades will NOT be too drastic to the extend it changes the structure of the building.

The planned upgrades for the Open Air Market include the provision of improved facilities that will benefit everyone.

Dato Hilmi was quoted by TVS as saying that DBKU has taken proactive steps to secure funding for the Open Air Market upgrades. They have submitted a request for financial support from the Sarawak Government, which, if approved, will pave the way for comprehensive studies and detailed planning.

These efforts will be undertaken with the assistance of consultants to ensure that the development is executed effectively and meets the highest standards.

The goal is to create a thriving marketplace that not only preserves the rich cultural heritage of the area but also incorporates modern conveniences.

The Open Air Market will be designed to accommodate the evolving needs of the community while retaining its traditional charm.
