Old DUN Sarawak to be upgraded to Sarawak Performing Arts Centre
World class performing arts centre to be ready by 2027
The Sarawak Performing Arts Centre (SPACe) will be developed with the Royal Albert Hall in London as reference. The centre will also follow an un-named centre in the United States.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said in a video which was shared by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
Another news report by Malay Mail also quoted the Prmier as saying that the SPACe will have state-of-the-art equipment which will be the most expensive part of the whole SPACe project.
In the same report, Abang Johari was also quoted as looking at how Singapore managed to earn revenue from the recently concluded Taylor Swift tour, as he hoped the SPACe will be able to also do that for Sarawak.
Utusan Borneo quoted him as saying that Sarawak is keen to bring in international artist to attract tourism to Sarawak, and the centre is one of the government’s effort to make this happen.
Development of Sarawak Performing Arts Centre
It is understood that RM270 million will be spent to convert the Old Sarawak Legislative Assembly building into the SPACe, with the centre expected to be completed in 2027.
According to UKAS, some RM200 million will be used to upgrade the Old Sarawak Legislative Assembly building, with another RM60 million used for landscape purposes.
Photos shared by news agencies show that the Sarawak Performing Arts Centre will also boast a massive boulevard in front of the building, with dedicated rooms made to cater for dancing, theatre, black box and more.
