New Simunjan Waterfront: RM100 million to ensure its beautiful and effective

Simunjan town is poised for a significant transformation with the proposed construction of a major river embankment that will double as a scenic waterfront.
This ambitious project, spearheaded and fully funded by the Sarawak government, aims to resolve critical long-term environmental issues while simultaneously creating a new, vibrant economic and social hub for the local community.
To realize the project, the Sarawak government has allocated a sum of over RM100 million for the embankment-cum-waterfront construction.
The figure was announced by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who emphasised that this significant allocation would be sourced from Sarawak’s own funds.
The ultimate goal of the new embarkment, is to construct a resilient riverbank structure designed to effectively combat the persistent problem of riverbank erosion along Sungai Simunjan.
The secondary, but equally important, objective is to turn this vital protection structure into a “proper waterfront,” thereby serving as a major beautification and transformation project for the town.
It is noted that the Simunjan Waterfront project will incorporate advanced engineering techniques to ensure long-term stability of the structure.
The design process will be utilising Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology to accurately simulate water pressure and other environmental stresses.
As of the latest reports (October 2025), the project remains in the meticulous design phase, which is expected to be completed soon.
While an exact completion date is pending the finalisation of the design, the construction phase is anticipated to commence immediately after.
Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris had however previously indicated that construction on the waterfront, which is planned to cover an estimated 500-metre stretch was expected to begin in 2025, though it seems there is likeliness it will only happen next year.
Once completed, the Simunjan Waterfront is expected to be a major highlight, fostering a vibrant public space for residents and visitors.
