Masjid Jamek Sarawak to add 6 new minarets

Masjid Jamek Sarawak in Petra Jaya will see the construction and addition of four main minarets as high as 75 meters next year.

According to news report by TVS, the four minarets will be accompanied by two smaller minarets which are 65 meters in height.

The minarets, once completed, will be powered by solar energy, hence adapting to Sarawak’s need to use green energy when possible.

The project is managed by Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Masjid Negeri Sarawak (LAKMNS) which manages the mosque itself.

TVS further quoted LAKMNS as saying that the six minarets are inspired from Medina’s Masjid Nabawi and Turkiye’s Masjid Hagia Sophia.

The project will start in 2025 with completion expected in 2027. The cost of the project was not disclosed in any reports we read.

Constructed in 1987, and opened in 1990, the Masjid Jamek Sarawak can accomodate up to 14,000 worshippers at one time. Is the biggest mosque in Kuching, and Sarawak to date.

Plans for renovations and additions for Masjid Jamek Sarawak are not new with UKAS reporting that Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg had conveyed his desire to do the six towers in January 2024.

According to UKAS’s report again, the premier intends to further improve religious tourism in Sarawak.
