Lundu Hospital gets RM2.5 million upgrade

The Sarawak government has approved a RM2.5 million project to significantly upgrade and expand Lundu Hospital.

The upgrade is aimed at modernizing its facilities and improving patient care with the allocation announced by Hospital Director Dr. Chin Shi How.

Upgrades for the project are scheduled to commence on April 1, 2026, with a targeted completion date of October 1, 2027.

The comprehensive development will feature the construction of new buildings for the Children’s and Maternity Wards, alongside a new isolation ward.

Existing general wards will also undergo major renovations, including the replacement of roofs, ceilings, and windows.

To ensure a safer and more conducive environment, the hospital will also upgrade its toilet facilities and install new air-conditioning systems throughout.

In addition to the infrastructure project, the hospital recently received a boost to its medical equipment. Through a collaboration between Sarawak Energy and the Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak (SABATI), a new hemodialysis machine was donated.

This addition brings the hospital’s total to 12 machines, doubling its capacity to serve 62 patients, up from 30 previously.

About Lundu Hospital

Lundu Hospital was officially opened in October 1965 and served as a vital medical outpost during a period of civil unrest.

During the communist insurgency in the 1970s, the hospital operated in a “red area” under strict curfews.

Medical officers at the time – often only two for the entire facility – faced the daunting task of performing emergency surgeries and obstetric procedures with limited equipment, sometimes using Medical Assistants as anesthetists.

Over the decades, the hospital has evolved from a basic 46-bed facility to a key healthcare hub for over 35,000 residents. While it has maintained a reputation for dedicated service, many of its original structures and equipment (including iron beds from the 1960s) became outdated.
