Kuching to have three new hospitals

Kuching will see three more private hospitals built and set up in the city.

Details of the new hospital projects were briefly mentioned and made known by the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as he unveiled the location of these three new private hospitals.

New private hospitals in Kuching

The three hospital would increase the number of hospital beds in Kuching by at least 800 beds as Sarawak look into tapping medical tourism in the near future.

Northbank Hospital Kuching

According to the Premier, one of the three new private hospitals will be built The Northbank, near Tabuan Jaya, Kuching.

He was reported by Borneo Post as saying that the Northbank hospital will be a 300-bed hospital with aim to be completed within the next three years.

This hospital will cater exclusively to cancer treatment. In 2021, Ibraco had promoted on social media that the satelite city of Northbank Kuching would have a Northbank Specialist Hospital.

Petra Jaya Private Hospital

Petra Jaya is already home to Sarawak-owned Normah Medical Centre, but Abang Johari had confirmed that a second private hospital would also be built.

According to the Premier, a 300-bed private hospital would be built in Petra Jaya with rumours in social media saying that the private facility might be also linked to Normah Medical Centre.

Concrete details on the this hospital remain highly limited for now.

Gleneagles Hospital Kuching

The third hospital would be in Batu Lintang on a land currently developed by NAIM.

The land, known as Kuching Paragon now, already has condominium units, with the master plan showing space for commercial areas, with the hospital being the third massive building on the site.

DayakDaily reported that this hospital will be the 200-bed Gleneagles Hospital Kuching which is managed by IHH Healthcare from Singapore.

According to the press statement carried by the website, the hospital will offer cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics and neurology specialized services.

It also said that once completed, all staff and doctors, facilities and medical services from Timberland Medical Centre will be relocated to the new Gleneagles Hospital Kuching. In case you didn’t know, Timberland Medical Centre is also part of the IHH Healthcare.

A medical hub in the making

With the addition of three new hospitals, Kuching is slowly gearing into becoming one of the regions top medical site.

Currently, the city with about 700,000 residents boast some of the best healthcare facilities on Borneo, with a new cancer centre also in plans.

It has four major private hospitals, two public hospitals, and 29 heatlh clinics according to the Ministry of Health’s website.
