Kota Kinabalu to fully use digital parking system

Places under the jurisdiction of the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has started using a dedicated parking app system to replace the traditional coupon system it is currenty using since August this year.

According to a report by Borneo Post, the decade old coupon based parking system will be a thing of the past from October 16 with DBKK fully implementing the new app and online system from then on.

Currently, the coupon system is used together with the new Kota Kinabalu digital parking system.

Despite the shift which will add convenience, parking rates would be retained as it is.

Daily Express reported that the new app would be called “Sabah Smart Parking”.

The app would not only allow users to pay for parking via their mobile devices, but also extend their parking period as well.

The app would also enable users to check and pay for a compounds, top up their parking credit and subsribe for season parking pass.

Additionally, the Sabah Smart Parking would also notify users before their parking period expires.

The app is developed by DBKK Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Digital Parking in Malaysia – Borneo

Just to note, once implemented, Kota Kinabalu will be the third city in Malaysian Borneo using digital parking system for their local authority parking space rental payment.

According to Borneo Post, first to implement such system is Miri City, which introduced digital parking in 2021 through the BorneoParkMiri app.

Bintulu implemented theirs in 2023 with a similar app, but named BorneoParkBTU app.

Both Miri and Bintulu’s digital parking app are managed by Borneo Parking Systems Sdn. Bhd. (BPS), a company managed solely by Rezeki Tinggi Sdn. Bhd.

Interestingly, despite Rezeki Tinggi being the same company that manages both The Council of the City of Kuching South (MBKS) and The Commission of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) public parking via Kuching City Parking Systems Sdn. Bhd., Kuching City is still using the physical coupon method up until today.

On a positive note however, there has been signs and news both DBKU and MBKS would soon implement digital parking in Kuching City or areas under their jurisdiction as and app, similar to the one in Miri and Bintulu, but renamed “BorneoParkKCH”, is now already downloadable and usable to check, and pay compounds from both local authorities.

In comparison, most buildings and malls that offer in-house parking in Kuching City had already implemented digital parking through the use of Pay&Go.
