India Street covered roof design revealed

The design of the keenly awaited roofing over the India Street Pedestrian Mall here has been unveiled, and it looks like a rainforest canopy made of steel and glass.

Computer-generated renderings show a series of tree trunk-like columns rising from the streets and supporting the panels above. The overall covering itself comprises panels in different shades of green and yellow, resembling branches and leaves.

Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) will implement the estimated RM4.3mil project via a tender process.

Construction will take eight months, and it is expected to be ready by March 2016.

The canopies will have different heights, as the shoplots vary in heights. This means that some canopies will measure between 8m, 10m and 12m above street level with the tallest canopies located in the middle of the street.

A minimum allowance of 3 metres between the top of the buildings and the canopies would also be implemented to enable natural ventilation.
