‘I Heart Kuching’ is the only mural in South East Asia nominated for Best of 2022 Award

A mural in Kuching has been nominated by Street Art Cities as one of the Best of 2022, in the world.

The mural is listed as the top 100 in the world once it is nominated.

More interesting, the mural titled ‘I heart Kuching’ by Sarawakian Leonard Siaw is the only mural from Malaysia, and South East Asia, to nominated for such an award by the website which ‘celebrates the most popular street art across the world’.

About the mural

The mural shows a lady gently cuddling a cat, and it is located Jalan Wawasan.

You cannot miss it if you are walking or driving along the road.

According to a description provided, “the cat in the mural is the symbolism of Kuching city, also known as the “Cat City”, owing the fact that the word Kuching is actually derived from the Malay word “kucing”, it translates “cat”. And it gently cuddles by the lady who smile through the pain that overcomes the battle against thalassemia, which portrays positive vibe and the passion & compassion of Kuchingites/Cat Citizens.”

About the Best of 2022 awards

The Best of 2022 award recognizes the artwork and street art around the globe in one single site.

Last year, the mural “Caesar” by Diego As from Lugo was picked as the best mural on the world.

To be nominated, the mural or artwork must be noticed by the Street Art Cities, in which they will share them via their Instagram stories to choose worthy ones through their own algorithm, which involves calculating a score which takes numerous factors in account like total views, votes & engagement.

Street Art Cities says that 100 artwork were selected as nominees, and this year, one came from Kuching, Sarawak!

Voting begins

Voting to choose the best artwork has already begun with Street Art Cities already shortlisting Top 10 shortlisted nominees released today, 20 January 2023.

However, this does not mean ‘I heart Kuching’ is out of the competition just yet because voting will only end in 11 days (expected 31 January 2023).

That said, if you think ‘I Heart Kuching’, Kuching City and Leonard Siaw deserves your vote, download the Street Art Cities app, register yourself, and start voting.
