Hospital Umum Sarawak best in East Malaysia for 2025

Establish magazine Newsweek and global data platform, Statista has released the list of the World’s Best Hospitals 2025, and public hospital, Hospital Umum Sarawak (HUS) in Kuching, has been ranked as the best hospital in East Malaysia.

The American publication placed HUS at 27th in Malaysia’s list of 50 hospitals which was largely dominated by West Malaysian private hospitals.

According to the publication, the ranking of the hospitals come from scores that were calculated for each hospital.

Each hospital was judged based on four categories namely Peer recommenda­tions (35 percent national, 5 percent international), patient experience (17.5 percent), hospital quali­ty metrics (37.5 percent), PROMs implementation (5 percent).

The results emerged with HUS being the overall best East Malaysian hospital, with private hospital KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital coming in second best at the rank at 33rd.

Public hospital, Hospital Queen Elizabeth in Likas ranked at 36th while Sarawak’s very own private hospital, Normah Medical Specialist Centre came in 39th.

Interestingly, Hospital Bintulu which is currently upgrading its facilities, was also ranked in the World’s Best Hospitals 2025, with it being ranked 48th.

For the record, this is not the first time a hospital in Sarawak has been declared being one of the best in Malaysia with HUS’s Heart Centre also ranked as 3rd best cardiology centre in the country in 2023 by the Newsweek and Statista.

Best Hospital in Malaysia

In Malaysia, Hospital Kuala Lumpur is ranked as the best public hospital in the World’s Best Hospitals 2025, while Sunway Medical Centre ranks first overall in Malaysia. Mayo Clinic – Rochester in USA is ranked the best hospital in the ranking.
