Federal Budget 2026: Miri to see major infrastructure and economic boost

The Malaysian Federal Budget 2026, known as Belanjawan MADANI has given Miri, the second-largest city in Sarawak and a vital administrative and oil and gas hub in the northern region, several key benefits across fiscal, infrastructural, and community sectors.
Based on the allocations outlined in the budget speech, Miri can expect enhanced connectivity, boost its local economy, and improve the quality of life for its residents, ensuring the city plays a pivotal role in the region’s overall progress.
On-going and upgraded projects in Miri
Aside from the nearly completed Pan Borneo Highway which is now open for public use, Miri is expected to also benefit from the on-going construction of the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR).
The new road link is scheduled to be completed in two phases with Phase 1 expected to conclude by November 2026, and Phase 2 following suit by mid-2029.

Miri will also enjoy an extension of the Mobile Community Services, which brings essential government services directly to rural and remote populations.
Based on the budget speech, it is confirmed that such services will expand to 19 new areas which includes Telang Usan in Miri Division.
The government is also seeking to improve Miri airport with RM2.3 billion allocated to the development of airports in the country, which include Miri.
Although specifications remain scarce, these development are expected to be completed in 2028.
The Short Take Off and Landing Port (STOLport) in Marudi, Miri, will also be getting an upgrade which is expected to be completed in 2027.
Also confirmed in the budget speech is the allocation of RM1.5billion to upgrade numerous facilities in the country.
This includes the upgrade of ICQS (Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security) Sungai Tujoh, Miri, Sarawak.
The length of the upgrade works was not noted in the speech, but user of ICQS Sungai Tujoh can expect it to improve movement and facilities at the immigration facility.
New Unity Activity Centre in Miri
Last but not least, the 2026 Federal Budget also stated that Miri stands to also have a new Unity Activity Centre (Pusat Aktiviti Perpaduan).
The facility is the first of its kind in Sarawak.
The centre, alongside another two more to be built in Perak and Terengganu, has been allocated the sum of RM40 million for its collective constuction with no mention of its completion date.
All the projects noted here are not inclusive of the ones not mentioned in the budget, which could vary as there is an allocation of RM6 billion for development projects in Sarawak alone.
