This is according to IQAir, which monitors air quality in real-time, and produces a data and ranking.

Based on the site’s ranking, Bongawan in Sabah has the best Air Quality Index (AQI) average throughout 2023 at 6.7, followed by Sandakan in Sabah which recorded 9.6.

Langkawi in Kedah is the only place in West Malaysia that made the best air quality index reading in the Malaysia top 10 list of 2023.

The worst AQI reading for 2023 was mostly recorded in the South Coast of West Malaysia with Klang, Selangor taking the honors at AQI of 33.5, followed by Banting in Selangor at 31.9. This was followed by Nilai, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Putrajaya, Johor Bahru, Seremban, Perai and Pasir Gudang.

Kuching 3rd today in real-time world ranking

Interestingly, at the time of reporting, Kuching’s AQI which was 11, was good enough to make it third best in the world in the site’s real-time major city world ranking.

The city is just behind Copenhagen, Denmark, and Canberra, Australia which had an AQI of 10, both securing the top two spots.

Kuching also had the same AQI yesterday with TheSun reporting that Kuching was second in the real-time AQI ranking.

The real-time ranking includes around 123 major cities, showcasing some of the largest and most well-known metropolises, ordered by their AQI. Cities which are not listed can be searched in the search toolbar.

The AQI for each city is the median value from all monitoring stations in that city at the given time.
