Yayasan Sarawak International School Miri located in Bekenu-Beraya as Sarawak plans more schools

The Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) Miri will be in the Bekenu-Beraya area.

The school marks a transformative era for the Northern Region of Sarawak as it provides Cambridge-standard education for Sarawakians.

The location of the fifth of such school was made known by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the launch of Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School on 31 January 2026.

The Bekenu-Beraya Site: Why it Matters

The Miri campus is situated approximately 35 kilometers south of Miri city center, nestled within the Subis District under the Bekenu constituency.

Based on photos shown by Borneo Development Corporation (BDC), the land for the school has already been cleared and flattened and construction is said to be progressing.

It is believed that this specific location was chosen for its unique balance of accessibility and seclusion.

By placing the school in the Beraya area, the Sarawak government seems to be targeting a “sweet spot” in regional logistics.

The location is close enough to Miri’s urban infrastructure – including hospitals and the Miri Airport, yet far enough to provide a serene, coastal-adjacent environment that is conducive to deep focus and study.

For students coming from the rural hinterlands of Baram, Limbang, or Lawas, the Beraya site serves as a vital midpoint that bridges the gap between their home communities and the global opportunities afforded by an international curriculum.

This shows much thought had been given to the school’s location.

In terms of facilities, YSISS Miri is expected to have similar facilities with other sister campuses in Sarawak.

Like all Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School, YSISS Miri will be a fully residential campus with roughly 80% of students expected to reside in on-site dormitories.

Adding another Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School

Sarawak now already operates two Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School,

YSISS Petra Jaya opened in 2022 and is currently using the former Tunku Putra School premisses as its campus, while YSISS Kuching in Mile 12, Kuching opened in 11 March 2024.

YSISS Sibu opened late last year and started operations on 27 September 2025.

Both YSISS Miri and Bintulu are currently under developmenty and also expected to open in the next few years, with the government now also planning to construct a sixth campus, rumoured for Betong.

With five schools running and two already underway, the Sarawak government has officially become the first in Malaysia to have such extensive international school network in Malaysia.
