Swinburne Sarawak Research Institute: 10 acres reserved for massive new education facility

The Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is set for a major expansion with the development of a dedicated Swinburne Research Institute in Kuching, Sarawak.
The Sarawak government has committed to allocating an initial 10 acres of land for the new campus, with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg indicating a potential expansion to 15 acres should the university meet the demand for critical technical thinkers.
This strategic initiative is driven by the Premier’s vision to strengthen Sarawak’s innovation ecosystem and nurture the high-skilled workforce necessary to drive the state’s strategic growth.
The primary reason for the institute’s establishment is to advance Sarawak in four key economic frontiers: green energy, semiconductors, petrochemicals, and materials science.
This focus is crucial for the state’s transition towards a high-income, technologically advanced economy, aligning with its Post-Development Strategy 2030, which emphasizes the digital economy, renewable energy, and Industry 4.0 initiatives.
The new Swinburne Research Institute is still in the early conceptual design phase, meaning the total construction cost and completion date have not been officially finalized or publicly announced.
However, the Sarawak government has committed to funding the investment for the research centre and equipping it with the latest cutting-edge technology.
The Premier noted that this investment will enable Sarawak to analyze and convert its own rich natural resources into high-value products through innovation and local expertise.
The proposed state-of-the-art facilities for the Swinburne Sarawak research institute the following labs:
- Energy Transformation Lab focusing on renewable, green hydrogen and biomass energy;
- Advanced Manufacturing Lab specialising in composite materials and material science;
- Materials Testing Lab for industrial testing and innovation; and
- Digital Twin Simulation Lab to support IR4.0 and ‘factory of the future’ technologies.
Once construction begins, the project will mark a major milestone in developing Sarawak’s intellectual capacity and securing its future as a developed state by 2030.
