
Bako National Park and Lambir National Park in Miri have been nominated as ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP).
According to Sarawak Tribune, the decision for Bako National Park‘s nomination is expected in September, with an official ceremony slated for November in Vietnam if it receives approval.
Being recognized as such area would elevate Bako and Lambir’s status as a crucial conservation site, highlighting its geological and natural heritage, and its role in sustainable development within Sarawak.
What is ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme
According to www.aseanbiodiversity.org, the AHP are selected protected areas across the ASEAN region recognized for their unique biodiversity, ecosystems, wilderness, and outstanding values in scenic, cultural, educational, research, recreational, and tourism aspects.
Established to highlight these areas’ importance in regional and global biodiversity conservation, the AHP Programme aims to generate greater awareness, appreciation, and conservation of ASEAN’s rich natural heritage.
As of October 2024, there are 62 designated ASEAN Heritage Parks and in Malaysia with Kinabalu National Park, Gunung Mulu National Park, and Taman Negara National Park listed as AHP up to now.
