About Rentap
Rentap, also known as Libau Rentap, was a legendary Iban warrior and leader in Sarawak, Malaysia, renowned for his resistance against the rule of the first White Rajah, James Brooke, in the mid-19th century. He fiercely opposed Brooke’s encroachment, viewing it as a threat to Iban independence and their traditional way of life. Rentap’s military prowess, strategic thinking, and effective use of guerrilla tactics in the jungle terrain made him a formidable opponent.
Rentap became a symbol of Iban resistance and a legendary figure in Iban folklore. His story is celebrated today as an example of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. The famous Iban battle cry, “Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban” (While I Live, I Fight), often attributed to Rentap, has become a powerful symbol of resistance and defiance, resonating beyond Sarawak. His legacy continues to inspire and remind people of the importance of fighting for one’s beliefs and freedom.
