Masjid Darul Makmur Serian has a ‘Baruk’ inspired design

The newly renovated mosque in Serian, formerly known as Masjid Bahagian Serian, has officially been renamed Masjid Darul Makmur.

The name perfectly captures its essence, meaning “the abode of prosperity.”

According to a news report by TVS, this Serian mosque is more than just a place of worship; it’s a symbol of unity and cultural richness.

The change of name was announced by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

The upgrade of the mosque began in 2018 with a RM9 million investment, and it is finally opened to public last January 2025. It sits on a 2.3 hectare land just beside the Sarawak river.

It has a capacity of 1,500 worshippers, and is equipped with all the modern facilities like a marriage solemnization room, seminar rooms, a multipurpose hall, a mortuary management room, a childcare center (TASKA), and offices.

However, what really sets Masjid Darul Makmur architecture apart is its connection to the Bidayuh heritage.

The architects have beautifully incorporated the ‘baruk’ concept, the traditional Bidayuh house, into the design of Masjid Darul Makmur Serian. This is seen as being apt as Bidayuh’s are predominant in Serian.

Masjid Darul Makmur Serian future development

The completion of Masjid Darul Makmur Serian is only one part of the bigger plans by Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Islam Serian – LAKIS (LAKIS).

According to a plan shared by LAKIS in 2020, the mosque area will also feature the construction of a business center (food and beverage) which will house traders from the existing Serian Night Market.

In addition, the proposal shared in 2020 also saw a proposed Serian Riverfront development will include riverbank protection to prevent the area from more serious river erosion in the future, as well as create more space for leisure and recreational facilities.

Photos shared by LAKIS in 2020 also showed there would be a skate park as well as a boulevard nearby the riverfront.

Below are some artist impression of the proposed future developments from LAKIS.

Interestingly, Masjid Darul Makmur Serian is located just at the fringes of the new up-coming Tasik Danu Serian redevelopment, which will see a water theme park, as well as a new resort like city being developed within the area.
