Malaysia Airports plans Kuching International Airport expansion

MAHB eyeing land owned by SMA to expand current airport

The Kuching International Airport (KIA) is looking at a possible expansion in the near future.

This comes as The Ministry of Transport and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) look into the purchase of a land plot near the airport which will make the expansion feasable.

According to a report by MalayMail, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, said that Malaysia Airports plans to acquire land owned by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) near the airport to enable the project to upgrade Kuching International.

Funds for the acqusation of the land will be request under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (MP12) in 2024.

Once the land acquisation is completed, then the expansion project can then start.

The news report also said that the current capacity of the existing terminal at Kuching international is five million passengers per year (mppa), with Kuching international exceeding it by 19 per cent.

Kuching International currently has 5.9 mppa and the airport handled 4.3 million passengers in 2022.
