Kuching Civic Centre to be restored
Plans are on-going to return the landmark building back to its glory days
The Kuching Civic Centre, once an icon of Kuching City, has brighter days ahead as the government is planning to restore and improve the 35 year old building.
News about possible improvements was reported by DayakDaily.
According to the site, Youth, Sports And Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Minister, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, in his speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) recently, a Civic Centre Lab was organized to look into the dire state of the civic centre and how it can be refurbished and transformed.
Karim was also quoted by the site as saying that the lab also aimed at a business model and repairs which will bring positive impact to all parties.
The Kuching Civic Centre currenly houses the Sarawak Planetarium Sultan Iskandar and the PetroSains Playsmart Kuching. The centre also consist of a few hawker stalls.
Prior to the Civic Centre’s tower closure, it had one of the highest public towers in Kuching which provided a 360 degree view of Kuching City, with a restaurant also part of the landmark building. It also used to house a public library at some point with the hall also used as a gym.
Karim’s ministry is also looking into the repairs of the Sibu Civic Centre which has been declared unsafe for use.
It is also noted that the Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sports And Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MySED) takes care of 27 civic centres across Sarawak.
