Dayak heritage takes center stage in new Kapit Hotel

A new nine-story hotel is set to redefine Kapit, Sarawak, as a premier tourist destination.

According to UKAS, the ambitious project will blend local culture, sustainability, and the natural beauty of the Lily Pond area, promising a unique experience for visitors particularly in its design.

It will be developed by Borneo Development Corporation (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd in partnership with Jurubina Unireka.

The article said that the hotel’s design will showcase traditional Iban motifs, patterns, and colors with guests expected to see heritage textile designs like pua kumbu and ngepan Batang Rajang incorporated to the hotel interior design and facade.

The proposed new Kapit Hotel will be strategically located on the southern bank of the Rajang River, being built on a location which was formerly known as GiatMARA Kapit premises near Lily Pond.

About Kapit

Kapit is a division and town in central Sarawak, primarily accessed via the Rajang River, though road connectivity has improved. Historically significant due to Fort Sylvia, it’s a Dayak heartland, especially for the Iban people, where longhouse traditions and vibrant Gawai celebrations are prevalent.

The economy has been shaped by timber and agriculture, with growing ecotourism potential.

This comes as Kapit offers its visitors a glimpse into unique traditional Dayak culture, historical sites, and the natural beauty of the upper Rajang region, a distinct feature from the more coastal experiences of Kuching.
