BAS.MY initiative set to expand to Kota Kinabalu soon with full operation after CNY

Kota Kinabalu’s long-awaited modern public bus system, officially known as BAS.MY, is set to begin trial runs by late 2025.
Nicknamed the “Pink Buses” by the public, the service is a component of the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) program, a centralized nationwide centralized program under the Ministry of Transport.
The new buses, which are air-conditioned and equipped with modern amenities like GPS and CCTV, aim to provide a more comfortable, safe, and reliable public transport option for residents and tourists.
Routes and Fleet
BAS.MY services will operate on eight fixed routes and will cover 143 bus stops, with KK Sentral serving as the main hub.
The routes are designed to connect key areas of the city, including the city centre, Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Luyang, Likas, Cybercity, and Putatan.
The total fleet will consist of 48 buses, which will be deployed in stages based on production schedules. Full services of BAS.MY in Kota Kinabalu is targetted from Chinese New Year 2026 onwards.
Proposed Cost and Fare Structure
At the time of writing, no specific fare for a single trip has not been detailed, the it is largely expected that BAS.MY services in Kota Kinabalu will offer a “My50” monthly pass for Malaysian citizens just like its offering in Kuching.
This will allow for unlimited rides for RM50 a month. In addition, it is also likely that the government will extend free rides for senior citizens, students, and persons with disabilities through the “MyKonsesi” Pink Bus scheme.
