Association proposes direct flights between Kuching and South Korea

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has proposed the setting up of direct flights between Kuching and South Korea.

According to a news report by DayakDaily, the move was in line with the regions growing investment appeal.

New Sarawak Tribune also reported on the matter with the paper saying that Sarawak is attracting increased investment interest from South Koreans.

The daily also quoted Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin as saying that air traffic in East Malaysia is showing strong momentum, with IATA stating that Korea has emerged as a perticularly robust market for East Malaysia.

IATA’s statement comes as Sabah is seen as an increasingly popular destination among South Korean tourist.

Sarawak’s air connectivity

Sarawak is currently served by one international airport in Kuching, with four major airports serving the whole state.

Together, Sarawak is connected internationally by air via Kuching International Airport with direct flights to Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei, Singapore, and Jakarta in Indonesia.

Previously, Kuching also had direct flights to Pontianak, Hong Kong, Hainan and several other Chinese cities.

Aside from the proposal to connect Kuching to South Korea, there has been also proposals to connect Sarawak with Manila, Australia and South East Asia countries in the coming future.

Sarawak is expected to connect more international cities and airports with direct flights when the state-owned airline takes to the skies next year.
