The Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Project is an ambitious project in Batu Kawa under the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
According to news reports, the project aims to transform the abandoned Ang Cheng Ho Quarry into a public park, with sports and public gathering facilities.
It is noted that the quarry has now become an abandoned 20-acre lake, with the total land covered by the area said to be 29-acres.
The lake used to be a hill, known as Stapok Hill, but rock mining in the 60’s saw the hill levelled and later renamed to Ang Cheng Ho Quarry.
Local Government and Housing Minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian in a video posted said that the project will be divided into three phases with phase one currently under construction.
What to expect
There seems to be three phases for the project, namely Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3.
Phase 1:
The first phase of the project will see a multi-purpose hall and innovation hub being built.
The Borneo Post reported that the multipurpose hall will have approximately 19,375 square feet and should be able to house 1,000 people for events
A report by DayakDaily in January 2021 said that RM9.8 million was announced for the hall with an article from New Sarawak Tribune reporting that the the hall will take up 4 acres of the land.
In a recent video posted by Dr Sim, the cost of the development has raised to RM15 million, with the multi-purpose hall sitting above water.
It is understood that the contractors had to take six months to build the six storeys foundation below water levels.
It will have a pre-painted basketball court and an office space at upper level as innovation hub.
Construction on the project was supposed to begin in November 2020 and take 15 months to complete, and ground breaking was done in January 2021.

Phase 2 & 3:
The second and third phase of the development is still under planning but Dr Sim has stated that the lake has potential to be a hub for extreme sports and water sports.
He even mentioned that there’s plans to have a recreational park and semi-submerged hotel in the lake.
