AirBorneo Secures 3 Boeing Jets, Confirms first 3 routes and main hub

Aireborneo officially unveils its Phase 2 expansion plans while confirming its coming routes and aircrafts.

This comesFollowing the successful takeover of MASwings earlier this year, with the management now shifting its focus toward aggressive regional growth and fleet modernization.

Chief Executive Officer Megat Ardian Wira Mohd Aminuddin recently confirmed a strategic roadmap that outlines the highly anticipated AirBorneo routes, promising to bridge East and West Malaysia while upgrading the aircraft utilized across the Borneo skies.

Modernizing the Rural Fleet

Before reaching for international destinations, the airline prioritized the backbone of its operations by heavily investing in its domestic planes.

To service the essential rural AirBorneo routes, the company had entered into a strategic agreement to acquire eight brand-new ATR aircraft. This fleet upgrade includes five ATR 72-600s and three ATR 42-600s, designed to gradually replace the older ATR 72-500 models inherited during the MASwings acquisition.

These new turboprops are equipped with advanced avionics, superior cabin comfort, and special configurations to support medical stretcher operations for healthcare missions across remote communities in Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan.

To move beyond rural connectivity and cater to long-haul demands, the airline is officially entering the jet age.

The current turboprops are perfect for rugged, short-distance travels, but they are insufficient for the broader AirBorneo routes planned for the latter half of the year.

To solve this, the airline announced the acquisition of three Boeing 737-800 narrowbody aircraft through a wet-lease arrangement.

This critical fleet expansion acts as the catalyst for the airline’s regional ambitions, allowing for faster, more comfortable, and higher-capacity flights originating from the state capital.

Confirmed Domestic and Regional Destinations

With the Boeing jets secured, the first major regional AirBorneo routes are officially slated to commence in July 2026.

Kuching International Airport will serve as the primary hub for all jet operations.

The initial rollout will connect Kuching directly to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Kota Kinabalu.

Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu and Miri will continue to operate as crucial turboprop hubs to sustain the existing rural networks.

It is noted that AirBorneo’s management aims to stabilize these initial jet flights by the third quarter, with an ambitious target of servicing up to three domestic and three international destinations by the end of 2026, pending final regulatory approvals and airport slot availability.

Looking Ahead to ASEAN Connectivity

The confirmed AirBorneo routes for 2026 are just the beginning of a much larger vision for the state-backed carrier.

Modeled as a strategic infrastructure asset rather than a purely profit-driven enterprise, the airline is laying the groundwork for broader ASEAN connectivity by 2027.

Future expansion phases aim to link Sarawak with neighboring hubs in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
